Boston Provision of the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1973 is adopted in Washington, D.C.

Signed by President Richard Nixon , the provision in the law first allows Highway Trust Funds to be used for urban mass transit projects. Massachusetts subsequently becomes the first state to use its funds to pay for the relocation of the MBTA’s Orange Line along the New York-New Haven rail line.
